11/27/2023 0 Comments Spore drive in actionMy argument is that the spore drive is a plot device that allows the show to have the pacing that the creators have chosen. It moves the ship around too fast, from one plot point to another, leaving little time for exposition and character moments. The Klingon fleet with all 24 leaders arrives only some ten minutes after. By then, the presence of Seven of Nine onboard and options such as transwarp drive were far more fruitful than long-forgotten spore technology. The spore drive is the reason why Star Trek: Discovery doesn't work as well as it should. Space travel is almost instantaneous in Discovery, even without the spore drive. Officially, Starfleet declared the ship lost midway through Season 2, and it wasn’t until Season 4, Episode 14, “Message in a Bottle” that they finally made contact. No one knew where it had gone or even if it was still intact, and thus had no idea where to begin looking. The ship disappeared in the Badlands during the pilot, a region of space known for treacherous conditions. RELATED: Star Trek: Every Season of The Next Generation, Rankedįurthermore, even if Starfleet had access to the drive, they didn’t know where Voyager was. Even assuming someone knew about these details, the chances of making effective use of them was low, especially with other options available. As Lorca also explains, we’re not creating a new way to kill. Spock recommended at the end of Discovery Season 2, and while some details might've existed, they would have been officially buried for well over a century before the Voyager vanished. Using an experimental ‘spore drive’ as a kind of organic propulsion system, USS Discovery can travel enormous distances almost instantaneously via the network. According to a captains log from the Glenn, Ripper was found stowing away in the ships stores of mycelium spores. He was dubbed a tardigrade due to his resemblance to the Earth micro-animal. All records were purged from Starfleet, as Mr. 'Ripper' was the nickname given by Ellen Landry to a large animal discovered aboard the disabled USS Glenn in 2256, by a USS Discovery away team. That may be the beginning of the story why the spore drive. So maybe they are disturbing the network and endangering the beings living there and the spore life forms are trying to tell them. Routine Maneuvers: The Glenn is seen in spacedock in orbit of Earth. This spore being seems to be desperate to get into contact with Stamets who she thinks is the captain because he was the one navigating the spore network. Discovery, it was a test-bed for the spore drive. Together with its sister ship, the U.S.S. Stamets vanished into the future with the Discovery, and further research was discontinued after he left. Glenn is a Crossfield-class starship in service in 2256, under the command of Captain Deb Underwood. Additionally, as intimated, the spore drive wasn’t readily available.
